The Garry Oaks

Once covering large areas of southern Vancouver Island, Garry Oak meadows now suffer losses every year from development and invasive plants like Scotch broom and English ivy. The meadows and bluffs where the oaks live have a park-like atmosphere, with a profusion of wildflowers like camas and lilies blooming in the spring and early summer. These trees occur only on the southern island and a few places on the mainland, and several local societies are dedicated to protecting and restoring the Garry Oak meadows. The meadow in the path of the interchange is described by one expert as one of the best on Vancouver Island, because it is flourishing and growing.
